Refractive Surgery: Quality and Precision

Realizando una cirugía refractiva con wavefront en la Clínica Carriazo

In our country, refractive surgery in Colombia is synonymous with innovation and medical advances that continuously improve people’s lives. We offer a visual treatment that not only corrects imperfections such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, but also opens up a new landscape of possibilities for those who have relied on glasses or contact lenses their entire lives. Through meticulous eye surgery, we apply ocular laser surgery techniques that guarantee effective results and allow our patients to enjoy clear and renewed vision

In our medical practice, we understand vision surgery as a group of procedures that significantly improve the eyes’ ability to focus on objects. These treatments correct defects such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It is fascinating to observe how technology has advanced, allowing visual correction to be precise and safe for patients.

The benefits of refractive surgery extend beyond clear vision; they represent a profound transformation in people’s quality of life.

Imagine living day after day without the need to reach for glasses upon waking up or dealing with the discomfort of contact lenses. That freedom and comfort are possible thanks to the surgical techniques that we apply.

Independence from glasses

Reduction or total elimination of the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

Outdoor activities

The possibility of doing sports and outdoor activities without the impediment of glasses.

Quality vision

Improvement in the quality of vision, colors and many times greater than what is achieved with corrective lenses.

Fast recovery

Most of our patients return to their daily activities in a short time.

Every day we witness how refractive surgery opens doors to a world that previously seemed limited by visual barriers. It is an honor for us to be part of this change that not only improves vision but also enhances our patients’ enjoyment of life.

Types of refractive surgery available in Colombia

In our country, the search for clear vision without dependence on lenses has driven the development of advanced visual correction techniques. Among these, we highlight procedures ranging from the popular LASIK to specialized options such as LASIK, LASAK, PRK and effective intraocular lens implants, adapting to a variety of needs and ocular conditions. Below, we will detail each of these methods to give you a comprehensive overview of the possibilities available in eye surgery.

Technology we use at the Carriazo Clinic

Among the best known worldwide is the Carriazo Pendular Microkeratome, developed by Dr. César Carriazo.

This device improved the technique, reducing the risks for the patient and allowing the doctor to operate more safely. During the procedure, the laser light beam is directed so that it shapes the curvature of the cornea homogeneously and thus corrects the refractive defect.

Finally, the corneal disc is returned to its original position, without requiring sutures, given the extraordinary qualities of natural adhesion that the cornea possesses.

The Wavefront is a technology originally used by NASA. This technology applied to the eye allows the Lasik procedure to be performed in a personalized way, since the laser will not only correct the patient’s refractive error, but over time it corrects aberrations or imperfections in areas of the cornea that do not focus properly.

This allows the patient to achieve superior vision than with the conventional Lasik technique. Lasik assisted with wavefront, you can find this technology here at the Carriazo Clinic.

Everything you need to know about refractive surgery

How is the procedure performed?

Anesthesia is applied to the eye through drops, a laser equipment makes a cut creating a flap (a small layer of superficial corneal tissue), the laser molds the cornea, the flap is repositioned and lastly, the eye is rested.

The results are seen the next day, and the improvement continues over 8 to 15 days

Is local or general anesthesia used?

Anesthesia in this type of surgery is topical, that is with anesthetic eye drops applied directly to the eye, and therefore, the patient is fully awake. To prevent the patient from closing the eye during the intervention, separators are used that prevent blinking. In rare cases, general anesthesia is used.

How long does the effect of the surgery last?

The effect of the laser on each patient is different depending on their visual history, and over time, some symptoms may reappear.

There is a phenomenon called regression, in which, especially in high degrees of graduation, there may be a slight increase, but much less than the original graduation. The probability of regression of the visual defect is minimal in suitable patients.

An indication of a suitable patient is stability in their optometry formula for lasting results (more than 19 years).

What is the duration of the procedure?

LASIK eye surgery is generally performed in 15 minutes or less.

Does the surgery cause pain?

Refractive surgery operations are minimally invasive and are mainly characterized by being quick, painless, in most cases, local anesthesia is used, and no hospitalization is necessary.

During the intervention, you may feel a sensation of touch and/or pressure, but not of pain. In the immediate postoperative period, during the first 5 or 6 hours, there may be a sensation of sand, burning, tearing, photophobia. Normally, there should be no discomfort the following day.

Do I need to wear glasses after surgery?

The maximum vision a patient has with glasses or contact lenses is the maximum vision they will have after refractive surgery. Therefore, if your vision is less than normal, it will not increase after surgery, even if the treatment result is perfect.

However, in the case of high refractive defects, which are corrected with intraocular lenses or in cases of special ablation profiles, higher visual acuities can be obtained than were obtained with glasses.

How many days of incapacity does the surgery generate?

Refractive surgery is a very safe and precise procedure that produces a stable result, allows for rapid visual recovery, and if the procedure has no complications, recovery is 1 to 2 days.

As it is an outpatient surgery, it does not require disability. However, if trauma and contamination care are needed, as well as relative rest from everyday visual activities such as reading, watching television, use of a computer, and other technological elements, it can take from one to three days depending on the surgeon’s recommendations.

In the case of immersion in swimming pools or the sea, practicing contact or outdoor sports is only recommended after one month.

How soon will I be able to see well?

The postoperative period after a Lasik eye operation is quite fast. If there are no complications, in less than 24 hours, your vision should be as good or better than with your glasses or contact lenses before the intervention, allowing you to return to your normal life and perform visual tasks without problems, but avoiding direct eye contact for a few weeks.

In small defects, visual acuity is close to 100% the next day. In larger defects, it may be 80-90%, recovering the rest in the following days. Therefore, in most cases, in 48-72 hours, you can return to your usual activities.

What are the care instructions after surgery?

Surgery performed by an experienced professional using the latest technologies, such as the Lasik technique, very rarely causes side effects. However, it is essential to perform the necessary previous tests to verify the suitability of the candidate for surgery during a first preoperative consultation.
