As a functional area, the Carriazo Clinical Research Center is dedicated to:

Design, manufacturing, and marketing of ophthalmological implants for use in clinical procedures, in accordance with the current legal regulations.

Promoting ocular health and scientific research as pillars of development and competitiveness, actively participating in calls for research, studies, and clinical trials internationally.

Encouraging and enhancing research, development, and innovation activities as a differential factor of competitiveness in the health sector, specifically in ophthalmology, providing the community with the opportunity and access to the benefits of implanting ophthalmological products to correct visual pathologies. Likewise, it contributes to the region’s and the country’s development by promoting competitiveness and encouraging research and innovation.

Innovation Policy

Our policy is oriented towards promoting and enhancing research, development, and innovation activities as a differential factor of competitiveness in the health sector, specifically in the field of ophthalmology, establishing guidelines for the selection, development, and efficient management of activities. The structure of this policy is divided into three consistent parts: mission, vision, and strategic objectives.

Patents and scientific advances

We have a long history in the development of research and innovation projects. As a result of these projects, the institution has obtained participation in nine international patents. Among the most outstanding achievements are the Microkeratome Pendular Carriazo and the Microkeratome Carriazo Barraquer Supratome, used in millions of surgical interventions worldwide. These developments have been funded by international funds. Here are some of the current patents of Dr. César Carriazo:

  • U.S. Patent No. 6,551,306 – «Refractive laser ablation through topography».
  • US Patent No. 6,296,650 – «Microkeratome».
  • European Patent 1 085 840 (00 922 122 7) – «Microkeratome for Performing Corneal Resections“.
  • European Patent 1 402 851 (02 021 188 4) – «Implant for altering the iris color».
  • German Branch off Utility Model 20221042.1 based on EP 02023832.5 – «Aspherical Positioning Ring».

The company has developed diagnostic elements and integrated techniques for inherent surgical processes in solving anterior eye segment pathologies, released and developed by Dr. César Carriazo Escaf, as an ophthalmologist, specialist in the anterior segment, and cornea.
